The main project of this museum is to promote the art and history of China. It is also managed by the Ministry of Culture. It opened in 2003.\r\n\r\nPreviously, the building housed two different museums: the Museum of the Chinese Revolution and the National Museum of Chinese History. This building was built in 1959 and is one of the 10 monuments that were built for the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The entrance is made up of 11 huge circular pillars. After four years of intensive renovation, the National Museum of China opened 28 new exhibition halls in 2011, covering an area of \u200b\u200b200,000 square meters. The collections preserved in the National Museum of China span the history of China from the discovery of Homo erectus tooth fossils dating back 1.7 million years to the end of the Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty. There are about 1 million exhibits, including many pieces of art that are not found anywhere else in China or even the world. Entrance to basic exhibitions is free, while special exhibitions require a fee.\r\n\r\nThe National Museum of China is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last admission is at 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
