It stretches west along the Hexi Corridor, a famous trade route linking East China to the Silk Road era.The latter was protected by the extreme western portion of the Great Wall ending at Jiayuguan Fortress. Lanzhou, the dense capital is located in the eastern part along the Yellow River.
