The Chinese are huge consumers of mobile phones, so phone boxes are becoming a rarity. And let’s face it, with all the advantages that our smartphones offer us today, it’s hard to imagine ourselves in a phone box!<\/p>\n
So here are a few solutions for communicating freely in China:<\/p>\n
The first option is to consult your usual telephone operator about taking out a China travel pass, which will give you several GB of Internet data, at a reasonable extra cost, to use during your trip to China. Most telephone operators offer this option.<\/p>\n
You can also take out an e-SIM card with different operators. For as little as \u20ac10, you activate an e-SIM line on your phone before you leave, so you can access the internet on the spot on this second SIM. These e-SIM cards give you VPN access to \u2018unstable\u2019 sites and applications in China (such as Gmail, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.).<\/p>\n
They can be used to make calls from landlines and, in some cases, mobile phones. Available from kiosks or phone shops.<\/p>\n
Using your French sim in China: With the international option (free option), you can use your own mobile phone, but be careful as this can quickly become expensive. Ask your operator about an additional travel pass, to be taken out before departure.<\/p>\n
All you have to do on arrival is buy a local prepaid SIM card from one of the many operators (China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom). You will then be allocated a local mobile phone number and call credit.<\/p>\n
Please note that you will no longer be reachable on your usual number, but only on this new number. Your mobile must be unlocked for any operator. You will also be asked for a copy of your passport. For international calls, remember to ask for the rate, which depends on the destination country.<\/p>\n
